Answers

1. Beginning with the Fall 2007 semester, Copper Mountain College will offer daytime CMC courses at Joshua Springs, and they will be integrated into Joshua Springs daytime high school schedule.

2. By including CMC courses in Joshua Springs’ high school curriculum, we offer the following advantages to our students and parents:

  1. Increased variety and caliber of course offerings.
  2. No transportation requirement to CMC.  (Several JS students already commute to CMC for night and summer classes.)
  3. Students may take daytime CMC courses instead of night college classes.  This enables them to participate in extra-curricular activities without schedule conflicts.
  4. Students receive credits toward their high school diploma AND earn college credits that can be transferred to other colleges and universities.

Our goal is to enable students to earn one year’s worth of college credits while in high school.  This can save parents a substantial amount of college tuition if their child plans to attend a four-year university after high school.

3. Joshua Springs juniors and seniors who have approval of the JS administration may enroll in CMC courses.  CMC classes are optional for those who qualify.

4. CMC provides the instructors for the college courses.

5. All classes are transferable to CSU and UC schools.  No classes will require prerequisites

6. The fall 2007 offerings are ENG 3A College Composition and Public Speaking.  Different courses will be offered each semester.  Beginning with the spring semester, three courses will be offered.

7. CMC courses are public college courses and are not Bible-based.  We are carefully selecting courses that could be considered spiritually neutral; however, whether attending CMC classes on our campus or theirs, parents need to discuss this with their high school children.

8. The public is allowed to attend the courses that we will offer on our campus, therefore we installing fencing and implementing other major campus changes to separate college classes from our regular school operations.

9. The CMC website www.cmccd.edu has complete information on tuition and book costs.  All enrollment and payment is done through CMC.  CMC tuition is not included in Joshua Springs tuition

10. College courses fulfill the state high school requirements and count both as college credits and as high school credits toward graduation.

11. The grade in a college course is figured into a student’s grade-point-average (GPA).

12. A CMC course is considered weighted course like an Honors course.  An “A” is worth 5 points instead of 4.

13. Steps for enrollment

Upon completion of the application, you will print out the confirmation and signature page.
  4. Bring the printed application confirmation, the completed “K-12 Concurrent Enrollment Form”, and your transcripts to CMC.
  5. At CMC, you will take an assessment test to determine which classes you can take.
  6. CMC requires first time students to attend an orientation session.  They host more than a dozen throughout the summer, so you must choose a time that is convenient for you.

14. Beginning in Fall 2007, JS will have what’s called a block schedule for high school.  Classes meet for a longer period of time, but they don’t meet every day of the week.  For example, a student may attend some classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and attend others on Tuesday and Thursday.  The schedule is being finalized, and all parents and students will be notified when it is complete.

15. Many schools use a block schedule, and it has several advantages

    • It allows more in-depth work for a longer period of time during a session.
    • It allows Joshua Springs to offer CMC courses with no schedule conflict.
    • The schedule structure opens access to more instructors, which means we can offer a greater variety of courses.

16. No, the public will not have access to our K-12 campus.  Over the summer, we are reconfiguring the campus to seal off the CMC building from the rest of the campus.  The only access to the K-12 campus will be through the school office. (see map).

17. This summer, we plan to make major campus improvements, which include changes that keep CMC classroom access separate from the rest of our campus.

General campus upgrades

  1. The entire K-12 portion of the campus will be enclosed with new fencing, which will surround all classrooms, playgrounds, and offices.
  2. School offices will move from their current location to the buildings at the southwest corner of the campus near the exit.  (see map).
  3. JS student restrooms will move to the new school office area, which will be behind fencing.
  4. Entrance and exit to the K-12 campus will be through the new school office.
  5. All K-12 school operations will be behind a fence.

CMC classroom upgrades

  1. One classroom will be designated as a CMC classroom and it will be segregated from the rest of the campus by fencing.
  2. The CMC classroom door will open directly into the parking lot.
  3. CMC students use the church restrooms that are outside the school fencing and off limits to Joshua Springs students.

A campus supervisor will monitor traffic.

18. You can practice for the assessment test with a free prep review test at www.testprepreview.com. Click on Accuplacer Test.

19. CMC classes are scheduled to avoid morning drop off and afternoon pick up times at our K-12 school.  CMC classes do not start until 8:15 AM and they dismiss at 2:20 PM.  (Since there will only be one classroom that seats up to 30 students, the impact will be minimal)
